National Recreation Trail Designation

Its official! The entire 144 miles of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, including Maah Daah Hey 2, or The Deuce, has been designated a National Recreation Trail. The designation was made on December 14, 2016 by the Northern Regional Forester, Leanne Marten. The application for this designation was supported by the North Dakota Department of Parks and Recreation, North Dakota Department of Commerce – Tourism Division, National Park Service, Save the Maah Daah Hey, Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, and the Maah Daah Hey Trail Association.

New mile markers have already gone up along the trail and a new trail map is in development. Mile Marker 0 is now at the Burning Coal Vein Trailhead while Mile Marker 144 can be found at CCC Trailhead. Updates to MDHTA’s website reflecting the change will be made in the near future.
