Overview
Probably the best way to get to the tree is by starting at either the Long-X water box or the CCC campground and hiking the MDHT to MM 142. There is no longer a sign at the junction of the Summit Trail with the MDHT but if you proceed from MM 142 about 120 feet north bound you will find a rut on your right (east side of MDHT). Follow the rut, it is fairly straight for about a quarter mile then it curves around the rolling terrain. The tree is 0.4 miles from the junction of the MDH and Summit Trails, and just a few yards off the old Summit Trail. Here is where your GPS device will come in handy as brush, tree branches, and other vegetation may obscure the rut.
